Description

Monitor Azure Microsoft Compute VMs

Additional information

The plugin reads the virtual machines of a Microsoft Azure subscription through the Azure Resource Manager and Azure Monitor APIs and turns them into Pandora FMS agents and modules. A Discovery task selects the regions, VM sizes or individual virtual machines to monitor. Selecting a region monitors the region and every virtual machine it contains, including machines added later; selecting a VM size monitors that subgroup, and selecting an instance monitors it regardless of whether its region is selected.

Each run creates an optional global agent per subscription, one agent per selected region and one agent per monitored virtual machine. Region and instance agents always report machine state, and when metric collection is enabled they add CPU, disk, IOPS and network metrics read from Azure Monitor. Region agents also aggregate the per-instance values collected in the same run into performance summaries.

The plugin authenticates with an app registration in Microsoft Entra stored in the Pandora FMS credential store and only reads virtual machines and metrics; it never changes the cloud configuration. Requests can be routed through an HTTPS proxy when the Discovery server cannot reach the subscription directly, and the number of parallel workers that distribute regions and instances is configurable.

What it allows you to do
- Create Pandora FMS agents for regions and virtual machines through a Discovery task.
- Select regions, VM sizes or individual machines to monitor; selecting a region includes the virtual machines it contains, including those added later.
- Report machine power state and, when metric collection is enabled, CPU, disk, IOPS and network metrics from Azure Monitor.
- Aggregate per-region performance summaries from the instances collected in a run.
- Add a per-subscription statistics agent with the number of monitored machines.
- Route requests to Microsoft Azure through an HTTPS proxy when direct access is not available.

What it monitors
- Virtual machine power state
- Virtual machine CPU utilization
- Virtual machine disk read and write bytes
- Virtual machine disk read and write operations
- Virtual machine network packets in and out
- Region instance counts and aggregated performance summaries
- Subscription-level monitored instance count

How it works
A Discovery task queries the subscription with the selected credential and builds a tree of regions, VM sizes and virtual machines. The selections in that tree decide the agents: one global agent per subscription when the statistics agent is enabled, one agent per selected region and one agent per monitored virtual machine. Instance agents are linked under their region agent, and region agents under the global agent. The plugin then reads machine state and, when metric collection is enabled, performance data from Azure Monitor, and delivers the generated agents to Pandora FMS.

Benefits
- Compute state and performance become visible in the same platform as the rest of the monitored infrastructure.
- Selecting a region keeps its monitoring scope current as new virtual machines are added.
- Removes the manual creation and maintenance of agents and modules for each virtual machine.
- Per-region performance summaries reduce the effort of reviewing load across a subscription.

Use cases
- Cloud operations teams that monitor the state and performance of virtual machines in Microsoft Azure.
- Environments where Azure compute is watched alongside other cloud and on-premise infrastructure.
- Reviewing CPU, disk and network load across the regions of a subscription.

Requirements
- A Pandora FMS server with Discovery enabled and a console to define the task.
- A Microsoft Azure subscription containing the virtual machines to monitor.
- An app registration credential (Client ID, client secret, tenant or domain and subscription id) stored in the Pandora FMS credential store.
- The Reader role assigned to the app registration over the subscription or the monitored scope.
- A target agent group and a monitoring interval for the generated agents.

Compatibility
Tested on Rocky Linux and Fedora 34, and known compatible with any Linux system according to the official compatibility matrix. Compatible with Pandora FMS NG 784 and later, according to the Marketplace compatibility statement. Requires a Microsoft Azure subscription reachable through the Azure Resource Manager and Azure Monitor APIs.

Limitations
- The region instance-count module reports distinct VM-size entries in the region, not the number of machines.
- Performance modules are created only when metric collection is enabled, the matching family is selected and the machine is running at collection time.
- Region performance summaries aggregate only the per-instance values collected in the same run; stopped machines or disabled families report zeros.
- The plugin only reads virtual machines and metrics and does not change the cloud configuration.
