Description

The RabbitMQ Discovery plugin connects to one or more RabbitMQ brokers through the Management API and turns cluster, node, queue, exchange, connection, channel and virtual host state into Pandora FMS agents and modules. A Discovery task creates one agent per configured target and collects the metric groups selected in the task, from the cluster overview and global message rates to the full queue, channel and virtual host inventory. It covers the broker state and the message flow of the environment.

Additional information

The addon runs as a Discovery task against a list of RabbitMQ Management API endpoints. It authenticates with the supplied user and password over HTTP Basic and only issues read requests. Each target produces one Pandora FMS agent with the modules of the enabled metric groups.

The cluster overview reports the cluster name, the RabbitMQ version and the object and message totals. Global message rates cover publish, deliver, get, acknowledge, confirm and redelivery. Node modules report status, memory and process usage, while node resource modules add limits, alarms, file descriptors, sockets, uptime and run queue. The optional node IO group adds read and write counters and garbage collection data.

Queue modules report messages, consumers, capacity, memory and state, and the queue message rate group adds publish, deliver, acknowledge and redeliver rates. Exchange and connection modules report their counters and rates, and the optional per-connection, channel and virtual host groups extend the inventory to those resources. Queue and virtual host name filters limit the resources in scope, and module name filters include or exclude individual modules.

An unreachable target still produces an agent whose availability module reports 0, with the connection error recorded in the execution information. The plugin only reads RabbitMQ data and never changes the broker configuration.

What it allows you to do

- Create Pandora FMS agents for RabbitMQ targets through a Discovery task.
- Monitor the cluster overview, object totals and message backlog.
- Monitor node status, memory, process usage, resource limits and alarms.
- Monitor queues, exchanges, connections, channels and virtual hosts with their counters and message rates.
- Limit the queues, exchanges and virtual hosts in scope with name filters and include or exclude modules by name.

What it monitors

- Cluster name, version and object totals, and queue message totals
- Global message rates: publish, deliver, get, acknowledge, confirm and redelivery
- Node status, memory and process usage, and node memory and disk alarms
- Node resource usage: file descriptors, sockets, disk, uptime and run queue
- Queue messages, consumers, capacity, memory and state
- Exchange and connection counters, message rates and network rates
- Channel consumers, prefetch, unacknowledged and unconfirmed messages
- Virtual host message totals and message rates

How it works
A Discovery task connects to each configured RabbitMQ Management API endpoint with the supplied credentials and reads the enabled resource categories. The plugin returns one agent per target with its modules for the Discovery task to create. An unreachable target still produces an agent whose availability module reports 0. The plugin only reads data and does not change the RabbitMQ configuration.

Benefits

- Cluster, node, queue and connection state become visible in the same platform as the rest of the monitored infrastructure.
- Removes the manual creation and maintenance of agents and modules for each RabbitMQ target.
- New targets added to the task are covered on the next run without reconfiguring the task.
- Category selection and name filters keep the generated module set focused on the resources that matter.

Use cases

- Operations teams that monitor the health and capacity of a RabbitMQ cluster.
- Environments where RabbitMQ is watched alongside the rest of the monitored infrastructure.
- Teams that need to detect queue backlogs, unacknowledged messages, blocked connections or degraded nodes.
- Teams that want broker metrics in Pandora FMS without building the Management API queries themselves.

Requirements

- A Pandora FMS server with Discovery enabled and a console to define the task.
- A RabbitMQ broker with its management plugin enabled and its Management API reachable from the environment executing the addon.
- A RabbitMQ account able to read the Management API, with its user and password.
- A target agent group and a monitoring interval for the generated agents.

Compatibility
Plugin version 1.0. Connects to the RabbitMQ Management API over HTTP or HTTPS. Distributed as a self-contained Discovery application, so no additional runtime has to be installed for a normal run. Compatible with Pandora FMS NG 784 and later, according to the Marketplace compatibility statement. No specific RabbitMQ version has been validated in a published test record.
